The most common variety, known as Namyats, employs an opening bid of 4 to show hearts and 4 to show spades. The purpose is to indicate a "good" preempt , whereas an opening bid of 4 or 4 shows a weaker hand. Responder typically accepts the transfer by bidding four of openers major, but may also bid the next higher suit as an artificial slam try. |
