Transfer Preempts

The use of an artificial opening bid to show a "preemptive opening" in some other designated suit. The most common variety, known as Namyats, employs an opening bid of 4C to show hearts and 4D to show spades. The purpose is to indicate a "good" preempt , whereas an opening bid of 4H or 4S shows a weaker hand. Responder typically accepts the transfer by bidding four of opener’s major, but may also bid the next higher suit as an artificial slam try.
