Transfer Preempts
The use of an artificial opening bid to show a
"preemptive opening" in some other designated
suit. The most common variety, known as Namyats, employs
an opening bid of 4
to show hearts and 4
to show spades. The purpose is to indicate a "good" preempt , whereas an opening bid of
4
or 4 shows a weaker hand.
Responder typically
accepts the transfer by bidding four of openers
major, but may also bid the next higher suit as an
artificial slam try.
