Takeout Double

A double of an enemy suit bid that requests partner to "take it out" by bidding his longest suit. This bid is usually made with opening high-card points, and a shortage in the suit doubled. Responder may, though it should be avoided whenever possible, only pass with five trumps, from which you can win at least three trump tricks. When doubling a major suit opening you must have support for the other major-suit. When doubling a minor suit you can be weak in diamonds providing you hold both major-suits.
